Description

Late 20th Century, Original, Archive of Nancy Jo Fox's Poster Tour of her book: Liberties with Liberty: The Fascinating History of America's Proudest Symbol published in 1986 by EP Dutton New York in association with the Museum of American Folk Art New York. This idea was initially a class assignment for Fox's MA in Folk Art at NYU. The book's publication coincided with Fox's exhibit by the same name, which explored the symbol of Lady Liberty's evolution across American folk art. The exhibit also coincided with the Statue of Liberty Centennial. The poster tour exhibited in all 50 States as well as several US embassies for two years after the initial exhibition. This archive includes: (17) copies of her book, both hardcover and soft cover. (8) photographs of the exhibition's opening featuring Fox wearing her custom made coin necklace. Magazine article "The Many Faces of Liberty" published after the exhibition and prior to the tour. (2) Antiques and the Arts Weekly published on February 14 and 21 in 1986 announcing the exhibition. The (20) 36" by 24" original posters depicting various American folk art images of Lady Liberty that encompassed the poster tour. Black binder with Museum of Folk Art letter head of the list of objects and their provenances used in the exhibit, press release dated 1985, early typewriter draft of the book with Fox's edits, tentative museum selections of objects, proposed ideas by Fox, 1985 letter from Nancy Sureck Director of Cultural and Special Events at The Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation INC. to Dr. Robert Bishop Director of the Museum of American Folk Art saying the "it's a knock out exhibit...a little jewel and one about which I am wildly enthusiastic.", list of slides used to propose the exhibit, and other correspondence relating to the exhibit. Slides in box mentioned in the black binder. Red binder of Fox's Culminating Experience Fall 1986 on the exhibit and her story of how she first got the idea to explore the Statue of Liberty and her process from bringing it from a term paper to a fully curated exhibition. (2) Liberties with Liberty folders with press releases for the poster tour and exhibition. Sheet music "We're Marching On (To Freedom's Call). Magazine pages describing the exhibit. Card from one of Fox's students at the NY School of Interior design congratulating her on the exhibit. Domestic Statue of Liberty card created by Fox promoting her exhibit during the holidays. Huge scrapbook created by Fox memorializing the exhibit and poster tour with advertising, magazine articles, and paraphernalia from the exhibit and poster tour as well as related to the Statue of Liberty, images from the exhibition opening. (3) exhibition posters. According to Dr. Robert Bishop, Director of the Museum of American Folk Art, this exhibit " [was] one of our most successful ever. Not only was the attendances substantial but critical acclaim unprecedented." Some posters and papers have staining or small tears as conducive for the age, but overall everything is in great condition and truly shows how proud Fox was of this exhibition and her dedication to American Folk Art.
