Description
1772; Original, 25.25” height, 18.5” width, 11” depth very important 18th century hanging cupboard made of beautiful walnut woods. Has single hinged door with recess panel featuring artwork of outlined and decorated star with the letters “LLSG” above and “1772” below. Door has peg construction with original engraved key escutcheon, with working lock mechanism. Interior has beautiful, decorated scroll hinges, with an upper divided drawer with pine woods, and two open shelves with very fine dovetail drawers with bottom open compartment. Cupboard is complete with crown and base moldings, mortise and tenon construction, and back has original rosehead nails with hand forged hanging brackets. Overall condition is excellent and structurally sound with one repair near lock, shrinkage, and some loss in decorations. Please see photos. Literature
Sulfur inlay is a rare, highly decorative technique used primarily by German immigrant cabinetmakers in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, between approximately 1765 and 1820. While many surviving examples are chests, this specific type of decoration was sometimes applied to larger, important casework, such as schranks (cupboards). Significance: Sulfur-inlaid furniture is considered a hallmark of Pennsylvania German craftsmanship, with prominent examples (such as the 1783 Deitrich chest) housed in major institutions like the Smithsonian.
