U.S. soldiers during World War II took Japanese artifacts as souvenirs, or "war trophies," from both battlefields and occupied homes. Common items included military equipment, but soldiers also collected personal belongings and cultural items. Following the war, some artifacts, particularly those with strong personal or historical significance, have been voluntarily returned to Japan.
