Literature

The uchikake is a formal, unbelted silk outer robe with a history dating back to the Kamakura period (1185–1333), initially worn by high-ranking samurai women. Over time, it evolved to become a status symbol of the nobility during the Edo period (1603–1868), and later, it became the ceremonial garment for brides at traditional Japanese weddings. These kimonos are heavily padded at the hem to create a graceful train and are adorned with auspicious motifs like cranes and flowers.
