Literature

19th-century American carved cigar store Indian counter statues are rare, highly collectible pieces of Americana folk art used to advertise tobacco products. Primarily carved from wood by skilled ship carvers and artists like Samuel Robb, these figures (often chiefs or "squaws") advertised tobacconist shops, shifting from large street displays to smaller, rarer counter top versions. Purpose: These figures, known as "tobacco figures" or "wooden Indians," were used to signify tobacco products to often illiterate passersby in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Artistry: High-quality, detailed carvings, rather than mass-produced versions, are considered "very important" examples of American folk art. Themes: Stereotypical imagery of Native Americans, including warriors, chiefs, and female figures holding tobacco leaves or cigarettes. Fox purchased this in 1988 from a Pennsylvania antiques dealer as a present for her mother's 80th birthday.
