Description

Early-Mid 19th Century; Original, 85” height, 60.5” width, 24” depth. Outstanding example of classic Biedermeier furniture in design and construction. Has light blonde mahogany trim with black ebony column, molding, and feet. Has two levels of crown moldings. Two center full length panel doors. Flanked by tapered columns with bronze pillar and capitals. Supported by tapered legs. It has dovetail construction. Very well crafted and shows superior craftmanship. Has shrinkage, scratches, complete with working lock, key, and escutcheons. This example needs some minor professional restoration which would make it a beautiful addition for any Biedermeier collectors. We encourage all collectors to view this here in our gallery. This descended through the consignor’s family from Germany by way of Argentina. Due to the size and weight of this lot, shipping will be unavailable and the winning bidder must arrange pick up from our gallery within 30 days of auction date. A Biedermeier wardrobe from Germany is a product of the Biedermeier period (c. 1815–1848), a style that originated in Austria and southern Germany as a simpler, more functional version of the French Empire style. These wardrobes are characterized by clean, geometric designs, functional forms, and the use of local woods like walnut, cherry, and maple, often with veneers and subtle inlay work rather than heavy ornamentation. The style was popular with the rising middle class, who favored furniture for domestic comfort and family life.
