Description

Mid 19th Century; Original, Overall length, 57.5” Barrel Length 42”. Full stock, 2 band, Side plate is stamped US with Eagle above, Springfield 1834. Top of barrel is stamped with an indistinguishable year. In front of sling loop is stamped CBS. Missing one sling loop. Has original ramrod. Light rusting and pitting throughout, otherwise excellent condition. Please view photos. Provenance: Brothers Collection. Due to the nature of this lot, shipping will be unavailable and the winning bidder must arrange pick up from our gallery within 30 days of auction date.

The term "U.S. Springfield Percussion 1834 Musket" is somewhat of a misnomer, as the original 1834 models were flintlocks that were later converted to percussion. These muskets were a variation of the U.S. Model 1816 flintlock musket, manufactured at the Springfield Armory. After the U.S. military adopted the more reliable percussion ignition system in the 1840s and 1850s, thousands of these older flintlocks were converted to percussion, making them suitable for service in conflicts like the Mexican-American War and the Civil War
