Literature
The artistic allure of Kathleen Hedges’ work rests heavily on her complete technical immersion in the lost-wax bronze casting process, a demanding multi-step method where she remains uniquely hands-on. Rather than outsourcing production logistics to an commercial foundry like many modern wildlife sculptors do, Hedges directly handles the meticulous wax drafting, preparatory steps, and precise "metal chasing" after the initial molten pour. This relentless attention to detail ensures that the dynamic sense of weight, raw energy, and anatomical accuracy of her wildlife subjects—from bounding pointers to fluidly climbing foxes—translates flawlessly from clay model to heavy bronze. Furthermore, her signature technique involves hand-applying custom chemical and paint mixtures to develop highly complex, layered, and iridescent patinas. Because every individual casting in her limited editions receives its own separate color treatment, no two finished figures are ever identical, guaranteeing a highly distinct piece for fine art collections
