Literature

Early American wood-carved soldier whirligigs are significant 18th-to-early-20th-century folk art, designed as wind-powered kinetic sculptures to decorate rural homes, gardens, or act as functional weathervanes. Typically whittled by self-taught rural artisans, soldiers often featured Civil War-era attire, reflecting popular history and providing humorous, animated motion to, or patriotic decoration for, rural properties. Based on a letter, Fox was looking for an "antique or authentic" whirligig "with glass eyes and some expression" and with a "red coat." She asked her friend to look while she was traveling abroad "en Europa."
