Literature

These three books explore the rich and often "hidden" worlds of self-taught, folk, and regional art. The Hidden Art: 20th- & 21st-Century Self-Taught Artists This volume chronicles the extensive collection of Audrey B. Heckler, who meticulously assembled works from international self-taught artists over 24 years. Focus: It highlights forty-eight artists, including notable figures like Henry Darger and Martín Ramírez, exploring their contributions to "art brut" and self-taught traditions. Structure: The book is organized into sections such as "Masters," "American Classics," and "21st-Century Self-Taught Art Worldwide". American Primitive: Discoveries in Folk Sculpture Published in 1988 by Roger Ricco and Frank Maresca, this was a pioneering survey that argued for American primitive sculpture to be seen as fine art rather than mere "folk" objects. Content: It features evocative, often anonymous works like weather vanes, face jugs, whirligigs, and decoys. Impact: The authors focused on creations described as visionary and offbeat, bringing to light many pieces that had never been previously exhibited. The Art of Brazil Edited by Carlos Alberto Cerqueira Lemos and others, this 1983 "Icon Editions" release provides a comprehensive look at Brazilian art history. Overview: The book covers a wide spectrum of Brazilian visual culture, from indigenous traditions to contemporary movements. Details: It serves as a major reference for the diverse artistic expressions of Brazil, featuring 318 pages of illustrations and index.
