Literature
The evolution of the modern bottle cap began in 1892 when William Painter invented the "crown cork" cap, a design featuring a flanged edge with 24 teeth and a thin cork liner that created an airtight seal to prevent carbonation from escaping. Prior to this invention, soda and beer producers struggled with volatile internal pressure using inefficient methods like wire-tied corks, wooden plugs, or ceramic swing-tops. Pepsi-Cola adopted Painter's revolutionary crown cap system in its early years, utilizing the corrugated metal closures to keep its beverages fresh while capitalizing on the cap’s top surface as highly visible advertising real estate. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, these metal crowns featured distinctive regional plant stamps, formulation notes like "Colored with Caramel," and the famous "double dot" script logo, serving as key branding elements until structural modifications eventually reduced the number of crimps to 21 and phased out natural cork in favor of plastic liners by the mid-to-late 20th century
