Literature

Portrait miniature of Amalia von Schintling, hand-painted as a contemporary 19th-century reproduction after the famous 1831 masterwork by Joseph Karl Stieler. The original oil painting was famously commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria for his celebrated Gallery of Beauties (Schönheitengalerie) at Nymphenburg Palace, a collection dedicated to immortalizing the most beautiful women of Munich across all social classes. While this miniature beautifully captures the iconic Biedermeier updo, ringlet curls, and classical features of the young Bavarian noblewoman, the artisan chose a distinct creative departure by rendering her traditional red, gold-embroidered cloak in a rich, vibrant green. This small-scale version is housed in an exceptionally heavy, ornate gilt wood and gesso rococo revival frame with deep scrolling details that amplify the prestige of the delicate artwork. Tragically, the piece exhibits a severe vertical fissure running down the center of the face and neck, a common artifact of age-induced stress on organic supports—such as wafer-thin ivory or horn—which contract over centuries due to fluctuations in humidity. Amalia's story remains one of the most poignant of the gallery; she was widely adored for her grace, but tragically succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 19, just shortly after Stieler completed her likeness
